As a Ventura County family photographer, there’s something about the Malibu coastline at golden hour that makes everything feel a little more like magic for a golden hour session. Sycamore Cove, with its warm light , steady waves, and slow pace created a relaxed environment for this Malibu motherhood session.

For this motherhood session, I wanted a relaxed environment that wouldn’t be too busy which led me to Sycamore Cove. Tucked along Pacific Coast Highway, Sycamore Cove is one of those spots that feels like a secret — and yet, it’s right there on one of Southern California’s most iconic stretches of road. For a motherhood session, it has everything: golden hour light, crashing waves, and barefoot-in-the-sand kind of magic.
Whenever I’m scouting locations for sessions, I’m simultaneously thinking about light, texture, and story — and Sycamore Cove checked all the boxes.
Letting the Kids Lead the Way
What I love most about my approach to motherhood sessions is staying organic and letting the kids set the tone. Simply put, kids are the best directors — they don’t overthink it, they just play. Which is why the most beautiful moments almost always happen when we stop posing.
We spent the evening wandering the shoreline, splashing in the surf, and digging in the sand. As expected, there were squeals of delight, sandy hands, and salt in the air. Before long, the sun dipped below the Malibu coastline giving us that golden hour glow that California does so well.
The Wardrobe: Telling Your Story Through Style
I provide a style guide for every session to give inspiration, but encourage them to make it their own. After all, that personal touch is always what elevates a wardrobe from pretty to meaningful. Needless to say, this family did not disappoint. A palette of greens and blues with a pop of yellow brought a sense of joy to the session. Above all, my favorite detail was the straw hat, purchased on their honeymoon in Paris.
That one piece told a whole story — of love, of adventure, of a life built together that now includes little hands and sandy feet on a California beach. As a Ventura County family photographer, I’m always moved by the way wardrobe can be a powerful part of storytelling. It’s not just about looking good in photos it’s about sharing your personality and who you are through the clothing you choose.
