There’s a particular kind of love that shows up on camera when three boys surround their mom. That’s exactly what unfolded during this Ventura County motherhood photography session on a warm evening in Ventura County. This family came ready to soak up the last light of the day, and what we captured together is one of my favorite sessions of the year.

Mom and Her Three Sons on the Trail
We met at one of Ventura County’s beautiful nature trails, chosen specifically the way golden light filters through the trees. It was a hot day, which called for finding shade along the trail to keep everyone comfortable. Thankfully the heat never got in the way of the joyful energy and connection this motherhood session brought.
Why Ventura County Golden Hour Makes Motherhood Sessions Glow
We scheduled this session at the tail end of golden hour. As the sun drops lower, the light turns soft, creating a dreamy, nostalgic images a family will treasure for decades.
For motherhood photography in Ventura County, golden hour isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s one of the most important ingredients for images that feel warm, intimate, and timeless rather than flat or harsh.
The Sweetest Part of the Session
What struck me most though, wasn’t the light or the location — it was watching these three boys with their mom. They all gravitated toward her the same way: leaning into sweet hugs and making each other laugh.
Those are the moments I’m always chasing in a session like this. Not a stuffy pose, but heartwarming and honest moments where you can see how much this family loves each other.
Tips for Planning Your Own Ventura County Motherhood Session
If you’re considering booking a motherhood photography session of your own, here’s what worked beautifully for this family:
Choose a nature trail or outdoor location
Varied textures — trees, open fields, natural light pockets — for a timeless, versatile backdrop, while also giving the kids space to play and run.
Book at golden hour
To get that soft, glowing light that flatters everyone in the frame golden hour is the time to plan. It also offers a break in the heat during the Ventura County summer.
Let the kids be kids
Some of the best images come from candid interaction, not forced posing — especially with multiple siblings at different ages.
