Golden Hour Family Photos in Thousand Oaks, CA

This session is a perfect example of why golden hour is such a sought after time for family sessions. When the light drops low over the hills of Thousand Oaks, everything turns warm, glowy, and soft. As a Thousand Oaks family photographer, I love sessions where the natural beauty is able to help bring portraits to life.

Why Golden Hour Is Perfect for Family Photos

Golden hour, as I’m sure you know, is the hour or so before sunset. At that point, the sun sits low, the light turns soft and golden, and harsh midday shadows disappear. That’s why it’s the best time to shoot for families, especially those with toddlers.

  • The light is flattering on everyone. No squinting, no harsh shadows, just a warm glow.
  • The temperature is more comfortable. Little ones are happier and more cooperative when they aren’t hot.
  • You get a dreamy backlit look. Sunlight catching the hair and the edges of the frame adds a timeless, film-like feel.

IBecause the rolling hills and dry golden grass in Thousand Oaks catch the light so well, the sunset looks even richer, especially in fall. In addition, the soft, layered hills create a dreamy backdrop for every family.

The Location: Thousand Oaks Hills at Sunset

The Conejo Valley has some of the most beautiful natural backdrops in Southern California. For this session we headed to Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks. It has open hilltops, soft layered hills in the background, and wild grasses and wildflowers that glow at sunset.

As a Thousand Oaks family photographer, taking a seat on a cozy blanket is one of my favorite ways to start a session. It gives toddlers a “home base,” and it lets the family settle in and relax.the best moments always happen when nobody is posing. Here, this little one was happily exploring the grass, so mom and dad simply stayed close and soaked it in.

Candid Moments with a Toddler

If you’re nervous about photographing a toddler, you’re not alone! Honestly, I don’t expect toddlers to sit still and smile on command, and I don’t want them to. Instead, I focus on real movement, laughter, and connection. The most beautiful family photos come from movement, laughter, and connection.

That means we:

  • Keep the session playful and unhurried
  • Use games, lifts, and tickles to get genuine smiles
  • Follow your child’s lead instead of fighting it

Connection Over Perfection

My favorite moments are the in-between ones: a little hand reaching for mom’s, dad leaning in for a snuggle, little rocks and treasure shared. I also love the details. Tiny hands, wedding rings, and the way a family holds each other will matter to you years from now.

What to Wear for Family Photos in Thousand Oaks

  1. Stick to a cohesive color palette. Cream, caramel, and warm brown looked gorgeous against the golden grass and hills.
  2. Mix textures. Ribbed knits, chunky sweaters, flowy skirts, and a little leather added depth without being busy.
  3. Avoid logos and loud patterns. Neutral, earthy tones keep the focus on faces and emotion.
  4. Dress for comfort. If your toddler is comfortable, they’re far more likely to smile.
  5. Think about movement. A flowy skirt catches the breeze beautifully at sunset.

Tips for Planning Your Own Golden Hour Session

  • Book 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. Sunset times shift through the year, so I’ll help you find the perfect start time.
  • Time it around naps and snacks. A well-rested, well-fed toddler makes a big difference.
  • Bring a favorite small toy or snack as backup.
  • Trust the process. You don’t need to know how to pose or worry about your kids behavior. I’ll guide you the whole way while letting the kids be kids.
